Loft Writing Minute: What Grounds a Story?
Contemporary writers prompt us to remember that every story has to find its footing. Reading their works is a reminder that stories don’t all sprout from the same soil. Rather than rooting themselves in distant adventures or larger-than-life heroes, many of these writers begin with the textures of everyday life, such as family histories and familiar places, then they build a story that feels impactful because it emerges from relatable experiences.
Two of the authors joining us for Loft Connect Live this August offer beautiful examples of this idea.
Following the Threads of Family
In The Many Mothers of Dolores Moore, Anika Fajardo blends magical realism with questions of identity and ancestry. Her protagonist is followed by generations of outspoken relatives who refuse to stay silent, bringing to life her family’s history.
Whether you’re writing fiction or a memoir, Fajardo’s work reminds us that families don’t only exist in the present, but, in reality, we are passed down their stories, traditions, misunderstandings and expectations. Narratives can be grounded by looking back at where we come from.
Listening to the World Around You
Across poems spanning nearly twenty years of writing, Emily Bright’s poetry collection This Ground Beneath Our Feet travels from ancestral journeys to neighborhood backyards and from historical crossing to intimate family moments. Her work demonstrates that powerful writing often begins by noticing the extraordinary within ordinary life.
We’re constantly surrounded by material, so it is up to us to get on our hands and knees and sift through these moments for inspiration.

Take ten minutes to make two lists. On the first, write down five stories, traditions or memories you’ve inherited from your family, community or culture. On the second, write down five places that feel like home, like a favorite park, classroom or coffee shop. Which list sparks more curiosity? That may be where your next piece of writing will be grounded.
