ClassExploring and Workshopping Hybrid Forms
This multi-week class will explore the ways we bend and break genre. From lyric essays to novels in verse, the hybrid form is becoming more relevant in the literary world as it reflects our current state of paradigm shift. We will explore both classic and contemporary works from writers like Vievee Francis, Nickole Brown, Maggie Nelson, Ocean Vuong, Claudia Rankine, and more.
Writers of all levels are welcome and encouraged to join! You can expect a sample of hybrid pieces to explore and discuss, followed by multi-week generative sessions and workshops. Our cohort will rotate weekly so that we create a community in the classroom, one that shares as many perspectives as possible. The goal is for every writer to work with each other over the course of the summer. We will celebrate with a final reading of our pieces.
Note: This course includes a lesson on revision, submission, and publication.
At the end of this class:
-Students will walk away with a deeper, enriched understanding of genre and how their own writing falls into the spectrum that is genre.
-Students will generate at least 2-3 pieces of hybrid writing.
-Students will provide feedback to other writers and gain perspective from those pieces.
-Students will learn about the revision, submission, and publication process.
-Students will read their pieces to their cohort members.
