Trying to find your way in writing your story? This class provides tools to guide you in uncovering the tale you have to tell, whether fiction or memoir. We’ll start with the big picture, exploring how the chronology of story––different from chronological time––can shape your narrative. Next, discover key connections to ground readers in your characters, bringing them to life through meeting them where they are in your imagination or memory. Learn how to better reveal their motivations and desires and all they have to say. We’ll also find out how to bring better focus on the crux of your story and further heighten reality, intensifying the reader’s experience. In-class writing exercises are designed to inspire. Leave class with guidelines on how to approach the re-visioning of your work going forward.

Separate from class, the instructor will critique up to 3500 words of your writing as part of a private half-hour consult for each student.

Please submit this request form at least two to three weeks in advance if you have any accessibility requests for this class. This class takes place in-person, at the Loft at Open Book. Please see the Loft’s website for the most up to date information about the Loft’s COVID policies.
