ClassIllustrate Your Story: Children’s Book Art for Adults
In this hands-on workshop, students explore the art of children’s book illustration by creating one standout illustration of their own. Class begins with a mood board exercise, using magazine cutouts and collage to explore color, texture, emotion, and character ideas. We will then develop illustrations through guided drawing exercises focused on composition, character design, and visual storytelling.
Throughout the 3-hour class, we will reference diverse picture books and illustrators, such as Ezra Jack Keats, Christian Robinson, and Gyo Fujikawa. You'll learn about characters, layout, and storytelling. By the end of the workshop, students will leave with a polished spot narrative illustration, a better understanding of visual storytelling techniques, and actionable prompts for continuing their creative practice.
Students should come prepared with basic drawing supplies (pencils, erasers, markers, or watercolor if preferred) and a willingness to experiment with ideas. No prior illustration experience is required.
The majority of class time will be instruction-based with hands-on practice, but students will also receive feedback and opportunities to share work with peers in a supportive environment.
This class is ideal for adults curious about children’s literature, illustration, or developing their visual storytelling skills in a fun, interactive, and inclusive setting.
