Introduction to Playwriting

If you've ever wondered how plays get written, this is the class for you. Bring your stories to life onstage, and celebrate the magic of theatre in this four-week intensive. You'll learn the history of plays, how to format and write a script, strengthen your character and dialogue, and see how we can paint our characters using actors and one small stage. We will finish our final class with a reading of our work! Students do not need to bring any prior work to class, but if you would like, feel free to do so. While some comfort with acting will help, it's not required.
If you would like to bring some of your prior work (if you have any), feel
free to do so. But please don't feel like you're behind if you don't! Just bring
yourself, your writing utensils, and comfortable clothing.

By the end of this class:
-Students will successfully recognize character, dialogue, and plot as three
important elements of playwriting.
-Students will learn proper playwriting format and use it in their own writing.
-Students will receive an understanding of the history of playwriting.
-Students will write a monologue and a two-person scene, one of which will
be read aloud and shared with the class.
-Students will engage in community with one another.
