Learning by Example: Creative Nonfiction

This class aims to help students build engaging essays by choosing experiences and narratives to translate into a finished work of creative nonfiction. They will produce well considered, focused prose interestingly portrayed with a clear, consistent voice. In particular, students will explore the key elements of successful prose: diction appropriate to the story, syntax that allows the reader to follow flow, a coherent structure, and engaging events presented compellingly.

While this is not a workshop, students should be prepared to share drafts of their work and receive questions and comments from their peers and from the instructor while being supportive of others and developing strategies for revision.

In this class, students will:
-Translate life experiences in prose
-Practice ways to structure and focus their writing at the line and structural levels
-Develop strategies for revision
