ClassTools and Techniques for Writing Middle Grade Fiction
This four-week workshop is designed for writers of all experience levels who want to explore the art and craft of middle grade fiction, which is typically intended for readers ages 8-12. Whether you are brand new to writing for children or actively working on a manuscript, this class offers a welcoming and supportive space to develop your work.
Each two-hour session includes generative writing exercises to spark new ideas, opportunities to share writing with peers, focused instruction on essential storytelling techniques such as point of view, character, conflict, and setting (also known as world-building), and discussion of mentor texts from published children’s authors. Participants will also have the option to workshop short excerpts of their own writing and receive constructive, encouraging feedback during class.
By the end of the course, writers will have a stronger understanding of what makes middle grade stories resonate with young readers—and concrete tools to continue developing stories kids can’t put down.
