April Graphic Novel Classics–1984 for Grades 10-12

These Loft Young Writers' After School Online program connects young writers and readers across the U.S. and beyond. They offer a supportive community focused on book discussions, building community, and thinking deeply.

Classics are more than just old stories—they're windows into different times, places, and perspectives. But let's be honest: sometimes they can feel outdated or hard to connect with. By looking at these works through a modern lens, they can come alive, sparking conversations between us and writers from the past and present who grapple with the same big questions about society.

One of the coolest ways to reimagine classic literature is through graphic novel adaptations. In this class, we'll dive into one of the most important classics of all time: 1984 by George Orwell. Published in 1949, this book tells the story of supposedly utopian society that is kept in check by the omnipotent Big Brother and what happens when one citizen tries to break society's mold.

Over four weeks, we’ll read the graphic novel adaptation by Fido Nesti, discuss the story, and explore how it connects to issues in the world today. By the end of the course, you’ll have a deeper understanding of the novel’s themes and an introduction to literary criticism. Students will need to bring their own copy of the book to class.

Instructions for Accessing This Online Class

In order to access live class meetings, you must have the Zoom application downloaded to your computer. You will also need a WiFi/Internet connection throughout the duration of your scheduled meeting and a computer with audio and video capability.
