Fiction with open book and stars

Propulsive. Twisty. Tightly-plotted. We might see these words of praise on the jackets of novels that could be shelved under a variety of subgenres, like mystery, thriller, or suspense. However these books are categorized, it’s clear that they all have one thing in common: they keep their readers hungering for whatever’s on the next page.

In this workshop, we’ll learn about what it means to write propulsive fiction that’s also rooted in a keen understanding of both character and place. Contrary to popular belief, stories that thrill aren’t required to heap a reader with action and surprises, nor to sacrifice character for plot. We will test this theory using the most basic unit of fiction – the scene – while learning more about what makes each of us tick as writers of page-turning fiction.
