These Loft Young Writers' After School Online program connects young writers and readers across the U.S. and beyond. They offer a supportive community focused on book discussions, building community, and thinking deeply.

Classics are more than just old stories—they're windows into different times, places, and perspectives. But let's be honest: sometimes they can feel outdated or hard to connect with. By looking at these works through a modern lens, they can come alive, sparking conversations between us and writers from the past and present who grapple with the same big questions about society.

One of the coolest ways to reimagine classic literature is through graphic novel adaptations. In this class, we'll dive into one of the most important classics of all time: Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. Published in 1818, this book follows scientist Victor Frankenstein and the monster he creates, interrogating the different ways humans draw lines amongst ourselves and what it means to be othered.

Over four weeks, we’ll read the graphic novel adaptation by Jason Cobley, discuss the story, and explore how it connects to issues in the world today. By the end of the course, you’ll have a deeper understanding of the novel’s themes and an introduction to literary criticism. Students will need to bring their own copy of the book to class.
