Class6-Week: Finessing Historical Fiction
Research may be the backbone of nonfiction, but it also adds depth, detail and accuracy to fiction. Author Rachel Werner will share the tools and strategies writers need to research with confidence.
Whether you’re writing for traditional publishing, the educational market, or literary magazines, understanding how to conduct and organize your research matters. What sources should be used to make a historical setting come across as more true than false? What sort of strategic and culturally-sensitive research is necessary to discover (and verify) factual information about the time and/or place you've chosen?
Using visual outlining tools, participants will brainstorm—then draft and revise—a short story in a historical setting. You can also use a chapter from your work in progress as a starting point.
This class takes place in-person, at the Loft at Open Book; we encourage participants to be fully vaccinated and masked in the interest of everyone’s safety. Please see the Loft’s website for the most up to date information about the Loft’s COVID policies.
