ClassFinding the Poet Within
This class is designed to get you thinking about new ways to write poetry by experimenting with image, metaphor, music, sound, syntax, lineation, and an engagement with both stated and invisible themes. We’ll discuss how to heighten the tension in poems through structure and how to make conflicting elements work together to bring out ideas.
Works of contemporary and classic poets will also be discussed in class, with each session centered around a different poetic form/structure to study and practice in class. Revision techniques will be covered, with the goal being that each student leaves with at least one poem that they feel is truly “finished.”
This class takes place in-person, at the Loft at Open Book; we encourage participants to be fully vaccinated and masked in the interest of everyone’s safety. Please see the Loft’s website for the most up to date information about the Loft’s COVID policies.
