ClassWrite It Loud: Finding Your Voice
MFA applications ask potential students to describe their voices. Agents say they’re looking for voice-driven writing. Critics compliment an author’s unique voice. But what is this “voice” everyone talks about—and how can you tell what yours is?
During this generative class, we will explore the definition of “voice,” learn how to identify writers’ voices (including your own), and start the process of enhancing your voice. We’ll spend about one fourth of our class talking about voice through craft pillars like character, POV, narration, plot, structure, style, theme, and genre.
You’ll read (very) short selections from authors such as Aimee Bender, Carmen Maria Machado, Donald Barthalme, Sofia Samatar, Ottessa Moshfegh, Ted Chiang, and Zadie Smith. We’ll spend about three fourths of the class completing exercises that will help you begin to define your voice. Those who wish to share their writing and receive oral feedback from me and their classmates will have a chance to do so.
