Play- and Screenwriting Graphic

Applicable to comedy, drama, and reality TV, this eight-week class is designed for both new and experienced creative writers who hope to break into television writing. We’ll study both short- and long-form screenwriting, including a look at the differences between writing scripted and unscripted shows.

In an interactive environment, students will learn the basics of creating, writing, and presenting your first television script for both drama and/or comedy. This includes how to take your idea to the next step and create a complete half-hour or one-hour television script.

The class will cover everything you need to write your first script, from idea to character development, style, story arcs, and voice. We'll also cover industry basics, including the best ways to find an agent and get your script in front of people who can produce it, how and where scripts are optioned, and true tales of what really goes on in the famed writers’ room. Learn from Bo's experience with Operation Undercover, which was recently picked up for series by HBO & Discovery.

Before the first class, students will be emailed several TV scripts in PDF format to read in advance, if possible. (More may be sent during the course.) Throughout the eight weeks, we’ll also be viewing many television shows related to the topics the class covers.

This class takes place in-person, at the Loft at Open Book; we encourage participants to be fully vaccinated and masked in the interest of everyone’s safety. Please see the Loft’s website for the most up to date information about the Loft’s COVID policies.
