The violence enacted on marginalized people is met with a poetry of resistance: art and literature as a political tool accessible to the masses. What service do research-based poetics and experimental documentary offer to liberation, memory, grief?

This course is geared toward folks with archival, documentary, or research-based interdisciplinary creative practices. This includes curators, researchers, scholars, writers, visual artists, performers, and other creatives. Through a critical analysis of documentary poetic practices within a Black feminist framework, we will aim to theorize interdisciplinary arts practices as tools particularly for documenting the liberation struggles and the marginalized experience.

The course offers practical instruction around facilitating a practice that is heavily research based. We will explore what specific practices are useful in various contexts, the ethics of research practices, what our responsibility is to the work, and what topics are best explored through this type of approach. Students are invited to take advantage of the generative potential of this course, using the practices and strategies discussed each week to expand on their existing work. Students will have opportunities to share their progress and receive feedback (however this is not a workshop-based course).
