Storytelling is the mother of all arts. The use of the term is ubiquitous but too often as writers we forget or downplay the value of orality. I want to appeal to writers to consider the value of the spoken word, the spoken narrative, and the invitation of the oral to provide a qualitatively different experience that the printed text.

This class/workshop will the permissions and limitations of the oral and written in what is sometimes an uneasy dance of form and content. It is open to your finding your way to the balance between the page and the stage, whatever your level of experience.

You do not need to read or write anything before but to come in comfortable clothes and be prepared to "attune" yourself to your breath and voice, to write a short text on the subject of your choice and to read / perform that same text with instructor feedback.

Come for the inquiry into the power and necessity of orality and stay for the discovery of your own "artful and truthful" approach to language with a quotient of fun mixed in with the prompts and practice.

This class takes place in-person, at the Loft at Open Book; we encourage participants to be fully vaccinated and masked in the interest of everyone’s safety. Please see the Loft’s website for the most up to date information about the Loft’s COVID policies.
