Class Play Screenwriting

Your play becomes theatre only when it is embodied by an actor. Using readings from directing, acting and dramaturgical sources, we will look at how your characters and story could have “presence” for an audience. Each week we will share extracts from contemporary plays and workshop students’ own work in progress looking for the moments where the text “quickens into life”. Along the way, we’ll also think about language and form and how to prepare to collaborate with designers and directors.

We will start with a short presentation on that week’s topic to start off the discussion. Then we will either read some pages together from the play of the week or dive straight into discussion of the readings for that week. If the reading hasn’t grabbed the group’s attention that week, we will always have the option to substitute a playwriting exercise in place of discussion. After a short break, we will then switch into workshopping pages from student’s plays.

Student’s can bring in any playwriting project that they want to work on and it can be their first time writing a play or a piece they’ve been developing for much longer.

No class on July 4.
