LitSeries Intensive Class with Lindsay Hunter

How are the various components of a novel working together to create a memorable, meaningful experience for the reader? How can the elements of craft collaborate? Once you've got a draft or two, how can you ensure it's cohering into the book you wanted to make? In this intermediate/advanced workshop, we'll approach your work as a vehicle for discussing craft.

We'll look closely at voice, character, conflict, structure, and more, weaving in examples from published works by authors including Mary Robison, Miriam Toews, Shirley Hazzard, and Toni Morrison, and finding new ways of seeing what's on the page.

Students should be prepared to complete in-person exercises as well as fully participate in workshops of their own and classmates' work. You will be able to submit up to 20 pages of work after you register.

We'll work on structure mapping, hone sentences, talk about beginnings and endings, the power in ambiguity, and more. Students will leave this workshop with a concrete plan for how and what to revise that is tailored to their specific project.

This workshop includes two lunch-time learning events, Saturday with Roxane Gay and Sunday with visiting agents Joy Tutela, Rayhané Sanders, Christopher Combemale and editor Emily Burns. You may add-on an optional lunch for both days or bring your own.

This intensive takes place in-person, at the Loft at Open Book.
