It all starts in a notebook, right? In this 6-week “Poetry Scrapbook” spoken word poetry and performance-focused workshop, we will dive into a river of words, rhythm, imagery and sound. Participants will explore a range of poetic styles, from traditional forms to contemporary free-verse. This series encourages curious beginners of all backgrounds to share their story using their unique voices in the form of verse, creativity, and performance spoken word. Through six interactive workshops, participants will have the opportunity to share their work, use a typewriter, create visual art and receive constructive feedback from both instructor and peers to foster a collaborative and enriching learning environment. Expect to be challenged and nudged out of your usual language as you venture into verse. By the end of the series, you'll have a completed scrapbook collection of your poems, artwork, performed, and knowledge of how to operate a typewriter. See you on stage!

In the final class, young writers will have the opportunity to participate and share their writing in an open mic in the Loft's Open Book Performance Hall. We will provide one another with words of empowerment during each performance. Final edits will be encouraged by the instructor to get one on one feedback. Evaluation through discussion and a survey will be included. The other poetry drop in dates take place on Oct 24, Oct 31, Nov 7.

This class takes place in-person, at the Loft at Open Book; we encourage participants to be fully vaccinated and masked in the interest of everyone’s safety. Please see the Loft’s website for the most up to date information about the Loft’s COVID policies.
