Your first five pages are the ones that will hook readers to keep turning the pages. Learn how to craft a compelling opening that sets the stage for an unforgettable journey. In this class, you'll discover the art of captivating storytelling right from the very first line. We'll review the essentials of an opening scene, common mistakes, and what goes into a powerful opening--and we'll have some fun doing it! We'll also discuss opening pages from authors such as Colson Whitehead, Casey McQuiston, and Mai Nguyen. Then we'll put into practice what we've covered through a few writing prompts. Please note that there will not be any feedback provided in this single-session class. This class is intended for writers who have a story in progress, rather than exploring and developing new ideas. After this class, you'll have the information to:
*turn up the tension in the first five pages
*decide on a prologue vs. chapter one
*know if you're starting your story at the right place
