Do you want to maximize the time you have to write or struggle with how long it takes to pick up from where you left off? Are you disappointed about finally getting going in your writing only to look up at the clock and see it is time to stop? If so you will benefit from creating and practicing a personal set of “writing scales.” Just as musicians need to practice their “scales” to master their instruments, writers do as well.

Like music, our writing has a sense of tempo, meter cadence, rhythm, beat, pulse, measure and repetition. Through in-class writing exercises, and discussion, we will identify where our approach falls “flat” (uninspiring ) and where it goes “ sharp” ( too harsh in our self-criticism). We will explore learning styles and discuss in detail how clarity and flexibility in our personal writing goals can help us set the most reasonable expectations for our output. This is a process class so be prepared for in class work and be open to evaluating old patterns.

This class takes place in-person, at the Loft at Open Book; we encourage participants to be fully vaccinated and masked in the interest of everyone’s safety. Please see the Loft’s website for the most up to date information about the Loft’s COVID policies.
